Battle Creek Dog Shot After Biting Man

Posted on Jul 10, 2010

A man claims he was bitten by a dog while delivering flyers door-to-door in the Springfield neighborhood of Battle Creek. He reported the dog bite to the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department of Animal Control, and they sent a deputy to the scene to investigate the claim.

The sheriff's deputy says that on June 28, 2010 he went to the door of the house and the dog charged out after him. The officer had not been planning to use his weapon and backed away but the dog still charged at him. The officer fired his gun at the dog and killed it.

The dog's owner says that her three-year-old Boxer mix, which was shot at three times, did nothing wrong. She is filing an official complaint.

Investigators say that all three shots appear to have been fired when the dog was approximately one foot away from the deputy. The police department indicated that they believe appropriate force was used in this situation.

The victim of the original dog bite in Battle Creek is having the dog tested for rabies.
